Introduction

If reports are never read, we are doomed to keep writing them. For if the report is not read, lessons cannot be learnt, success not built upon, and mistakes lie filed just waiting to be repeated. It is the ultimate Faustian punishment on humanity - armies of scribes writing reports for the rest of eternity.

The world will not end with a bang, nor a whimper, but with a report.
Karen Maitland, Theories at the Bottom of Our Jargon

In 2003 Yorkshire Forward asked us to write this book 'in a style that goes beyond reporting the hard outputs and outcomes, ...in a light readable style' so that the reader would not have to be a specialist in the area of community regeneration. They said that it should 'read more like a collection of stories than a formal report.'

Since that time the idea that reports must be 'readable'. has been our trade mark and the statement, 'Let us try the impossible, let us write a report that someone wants to read' our slogan.

In the last four years we have written books for government departments, ALMOs, housing associations, trusts and local government. These two thirds A4 books vary in length from 96 to 300+ pages.

Below are some examples of recent work.

From the Enemy Within to the Russians are Coming
The Fith and Sixth Single Regeneration Budget Schemes

From the Enemy Within to the Russians are Coming cover

This, our fourth book in the SRB series which started with Theories at the Bottom of Our Jargon, focuses on SRB 4 and 5. Like the rest of the series, it was commissioned by Yorkshire Forward for non specialists. They wanted a readable report that was 'like a collection of stories, a book to be picked up, thumbed, referred to and passed around for an insight into schemes and projects that illustrate key issues of regeneration and sustainability.'

It is the final book in the SRB series.

Pride Of Place
A Celebration of Renewing Our Neighbourhoods

Pride of Place CD and Cover

The new-found realisation of the need for community cohesion as an essential prerequisite for a properly functioning civil society, lies at the heart of this book.

By looking at eight successful Yorkshire and Humber projects, Pride of Place considers the different ways in which people all over the region are fighting to rebuild sustainable communities, creating a better community life and with it local pride.

It is an attempt at identifying what a sustainable village might look like if we could replicate these success stories. The book is accompanied by a CD which contains a tabulated question and answer discussion with a key participant from each project.
